Members of the GHS were asked to help with this annual event which hosted 11 students from 3 schools (from Devonport Plymouth-1; Ely, Cambridgeshire-1; and Truro-1), 3 colleges (from Helston -2; Truro-3; and Penwith-3). Six GHS members presented a number of demonstrations and artefacts to groups of the students over two days in the week,
Robin demonstrated Modulation types,
Des and Simon used our Microwave Communications Technology Workbench to explain the Satellite Communications from Goonhilly, and giving a demonstration of video degradation effects.
Andy demonstrated satellite tracking with a flywheel stabilised Antenna used to keep tracking the satellite even in rough weather.
Tony & Pat showed a range of historic artefacts saved from the early days of Goonhilly under three "Puzzles":
1. What is Smaller but much Bigger? - Computers & Memory
1960's: Goonhilly had an Elliot 803 Computer with 4096 word Ferrite Ring Memory (100 39-bit words per 6" x 8" frame),
1980's: Microprocessor computer based cards used dual in line chips (8192 16-bit words).
2020's: Now Lap-tops and Smart Phones use tiny surface-mount components which can hold 32+ Trillion 32 or 64-bit words or more.
Also Displayed were Paper Tapes & Magnetic Discs
2. What is There but Not There - Explaining Waveguide
A look at different components of Waveguide used at Goonhilly, and showing how the rectangular section dimensions are particular to the microwave frequencies used.
3. A Vacuous Experience - Looking at pre-Transistor Days
A look at large Vacuum Valves used in the early Goonhilly Transmitter and comparing them to smaller Valves used in domestic Amplifiers.
